Today we are meeting one of our most promising athletes….Mariana Zammit Munro. Mariana started playing Volleyball with Phoenix SC and is currently playing with our U/18 and Senior Volleyball teams. Lets meet Mariana
How long have you been involved in volleyball? How did you start?
This is my fourth season playing volleyball with Phoenix SC. I started playing at home with my dad (an ex-player and my current coach) when I was about 9 years old.
What is your biggest success and let down in your sports?
My biggest success is winning the award for best player twice, and my biggest letdown was losing the u-16 league decider last year with a minimum margin.
What are the biggest problems facing volleyball in Malta?
I think the biggest problem is a lack of promotion of the sport, especially at school level.
What is your current position with Phoenix SC? What are your main responsibilities?
I am currently captain of the u-18 team and assistant coach of the u-14 and u-16 teams. As captain, my responsibilities are to represent the team when dealing with game officials and to transmit the instructions of the coach to the rest of the team during the match. As assistant coach my main responsibility is to provide individual attention to the younger players and to assist the coach in the warm up and during the match.
How long have you been a member of Phoenix SC?
I have been a member of Phoenix for 4 years.
What is a memorable moment you associate with your tenure at Phoenix SC?
The most memorable instances were two hard-fought matches last season against Fleur-de-lys both of which we won 3-2.
What is a short term goal that you plan to achieve with Phoenix SC this year?
A short term goal is for Phoenix SC to place first in all 3 youth categories (u-14, u-16 and u-18).
Where do you see yourself vis-a-vis Phoenix SC and Volleyball in the next few years?
My long term goal is still playing for Phoenix, of course! And taking on more coaching responsibilities in our nursery.
What song you listen to before an important match?
I listen to the song “Rise like a phoenix ” haha :p
Any last comment?
I’m really proud to be part of Phoenix SC, and I look forward to many more years playing with my teammates who have become like a second family to me.
Thank you Mariana and all the best for your current playing career and we look certainly forward to have you for many more years here with us at Phoenix Sports Club.
