Good morning dear readers….today we meet one of the founding members of our women Handball Team. Therese has been an invaluable member of our female handball teams for the past years. Let’s meet Ther….
How long have you been involved in handball?
My first handball session was back in March of 2011. I had never seen a game of handball and just thought of it as a fun way to get fit. I quickly realized there is more to it and ended up really liking the sport.
What is your biggest success and let down in your sports?
There isn’t an episode I consider as my biggest success but there are a number of small personal victories. These are memories like being an assist during an offensive attack or encouraging a team mate to push through the last few minutes of a game or going for one last round during preseason training when my body is begging for me to quit. As for the let downs, it has to be every time I do not feel like I gave my best during a game.
What are the biggest problems facing handball in Malta?
It has to be how little people know about the sport and the minimal publicity the sport gets locally.
What is your current position with Phoenix SC? What are your main responsibilities?
I am currently part of seniors team and play as a left back. Having been there from almost the beginning of the women’s team, I find it a duty to welcome new comers and make them feel part of the team.
How long have you been a member of Phoenix SC?
I started my handball journey by joining Phoenix SC, so almost 4 years.
What is a memorable moment you associate with your tenure at Phoenix SC?
One which comes to mind is playing a full game with just 6 players, against an opponent with a full team, and getting a draw.
What is a short term goal that you plan to achieve with Phoenix SC this year?
Personally, I would like to contribute more to my team on game days and have overall better games.. Ultimately, each year I try to improve on my handball skills and become a better player.
Which song you listen to before a game?
No song in particular, but I mentally go overall what I would want my performance to be like. In my first games, it used to be “I will give good passes”, one which I still think about.
Where do you see yourself vis-a-vis Phoenix SC in the next few years?
I wish to be part of a team of strong women who have the correct team dynamics to give any opposing team a hard time for the glorious 3 points.
Someone who inspires you?
I have a particular person I look up to, from whom I have learned a number of lessons, and currently focusing on a particular one: when doing something, give it your all and do it passionately, or it will be a waste of time and was not worth doing in the first place. I think it applies not only to handball but to any sport and also to work and life in general.
Any last comment?
Handball has been very rewarding not only as an athlete but also personally and thus encourage anyone interested in starting the sport to do so. Thank you to all the coaches and committee members for their hard work and my team mates for making Phoenix so special. Finally… #GOPHOENIX
