In our weekly section on Wednesday, Phoenix People, we are meeting today one of the most promising talents in Maltese Volleyball as well as one of the hardest working players within our nurseries. Monica Zammit Munro started playing Volleyball with Phoenix SC and has now gained a regular spot in all our teams. Let’s meet Monica..

How long have you been involved in volleyball? How did you start?

Two years. My sister Mariana had started a year before and my Dad (my Coach today) and her encouraged me to start practicing with the club as well.

What is your biggest success and let down in your sports?
My biggest success was reaching the decider stage of both the u14 and u16 leagues last season. My biggest disappointment was losing both matches by a few points.

What are the biggest problems facing volleyball in Malta?
Unfortunately the sport is not practiced much in schools, so there are few children who start this sport at a young age.

What is your current position with Phoenix SC? What are your main responsibilities?
I currently am joint captain of the u14 team and play as libero in the other categories, including the seniors team.

How long have you been a member of Phoenix SC?
I have been at Phoenix for two years.

What is a memorable moment you associate with your tenure at Phoenix SC?
Every time I put on the Phoenix shirt is a special moment which I share and enjoy with my team-mates.

What is a short term goal that you plan to achieve with Phoenix SC this year?
I look forward to winning the u14 and maybe even the u16 leagues this year, and fighting till the end to win the u18 league.

Where do you see yourself vis-a-vis Phoenix SC and Volleyball in the next few years?
I see myself playing for this club and doing my part to bring more trophies to the club :)

What song you listen to before an important match?
Deorro РFive hours

A person that inspires you?

My dad and coach is my greatest inspiration. I am also proud of the fact that my sister is one of the best setters around, and that my Brazilian cousin Nicolas forms part of the Brazil national u20 team.

Any last comment?
Phoenix is more than a team, it is one big family and for me it comes before anything … a special thanks to all the supporters that have attended many of our matches throughout and have given us even more confidence in our abilities.
