In our second feature of Phoenix People, today we will meet Maria Agius, another person who has given a lot to Phoenix SC and who we publicly thank here for her unwavering service to our club. Maria is currently serving as Head Basketball Coach for the Women’s Basketball teams and she is also sitting on the Phoenix SC Basketball Committee. Let’s meet Maria:
How long have you been involved in Basketball?
This goes back to once upon a time when we used to watch my father play and later coach at Floriana. I remember anxiously waiting for the half time whistle to blow so that we could have an opportunity to shoot in the actual court. In school I used to be the girl with shorts under her skirt and a basketball on a hanger where you should have your blazer. So well yes it goes back years.
What is your biggest success and let down in your sports?
Cannot pin point one, there have been so many successes and let downs, but at the end of it all it is part of the game. You succeed when you have the courage to pick yourself up every time you fail.
What is your current position with Phoenix SC? What are your main responsibilities?
Coach for basketball u23 and senior women plus committee member.
How long have you been a member of Phoenix SC?
I think this is my fifth season…time flies…been through all the stages player, team manager, assistant coach, coaching at nursery level and coaching at senior level.
What is a memorable moment you association with your tenure at Phoenix SC?
Tough question…at this stage for me every little achievement is a memorable moment. How soppy does that sound?100% I think mostly the fact that even tough we are the so called under dogs the girls keep pushing to better themselves every game; that little achievement every time is my memorable moment.
What is a short term goal that you plan to achieve with Phoenix SC this year?
My aim is to consolidate a team for the coming seasons.
Where do you see yourself vis-a-vis Phoenix SC in the next few years?
Hopefully still working within the Phoenix family, and Phoenix having a greater presence in the local basketball scene in all categories.
Any last comment?
As I tell the girls it’s all about “Taking small steps and having lots of patience.”
